Treatment of onychomycosis is challenging because the infection is embedded within the nail and is difficult to reach; full removal of symptoms is slow and may take a year or more.
Most treatments are either systemic antifungal medications, such as terbinafine and itraconazole, or topical, such as nail paints containing ciclopirox (ciclopiroxolamine) or amorolfine. There is evidence that combining systemic and topical treatments is beneficial.
Lasers
Pinpointe laser is available in the USA and approved by the FDA for onychomycosis treatment.
Dr. Harounian is certified PinPointe Laser Podiatrist and has performed hundreds of successful procedures in last couple of years.
As with many diseases, there are also some scientifically unverified folk or alternative medicine remedies. A few of the very large number of proposed remedies are:
- Australian tea tree oil, which has been tested, but there is insufficient information to make recommendations for its use for onychomycosis.
- Thymol, the active ingredient in thyme oil, has been shown to be effective against the fungi that cause Onychomycosis.
