swelling ankles

Swelling ankles are generally the result of a sprained ankle, which is also known as an ankle sprain or an ankle ligament injury on which the ligaments of the ankle are completely or partially torn.

Swelling ankles are important symptoms in determining that the injury is not really a break in the bone. With swelling ankles due to a sprain, blood vessels will leak fluid into the tissue that surrounds the joint of the swelling ankle and pain is experienced.

Symptoms other than a swelling ankles in a sprained ankle are generally redness and decreased ability to move the joint and difficulty moving the affected leg.
